Overview

The Tungsten Smart-Heat Gas is a fixed radiant heater in matte black stainless steel. A honeycomb mesh sits over ceramic burners that glow deep orange, and the heater mounts on a wall or hangs from the ceiling so the floor stays clear. It is made for terraces, restaurant patios and covered outdoor rooms where a lot of heat is needed.

Pick the 300 series at 26,000 BTU for about 160 square feet or the 500 series at 43,000 BTU for about 215, in natural gas or propane. A wall bracket comes with the heater. Ceiling poles and a heat deflector for low ceilings are sold separately.

Features

A matte black face with presence

Matte black stainless steel frames a honeycomb mesh over the glowing ceramic burners. The look is industrial and tidy, and it suits a restaurant terrace as easily as a private patio. The canopy above the heater in the photo is the optional heat deflector.

Two sizes, two fuels

The 300 series burns 26,000 BTU for about 160 square feet. The 500 series burns 43,000 BTU for about 215 square feet. Each size comes in natural gas or propane, and each version is built for one fuel only, so choose the one you have on site.

Aim it with the pivot arm

A pivot arm bracket gives you directional control, so the heat can be turned toward the seating instead of settling for the first angle. Bromic credits its patented screen and ionization probe with the heater's wind resistance. The manual gives the wind rating and warns that high wind reduces performance.

Wall mounted, bracket included

Each heater is delivered with a wall bracket and control housing, so it can go straight onto a wall or other sturdy structure. The fixing must carry the full weight, 33 lb or 44 lb, and the manual lists suitable fixings for brick and for timber.

Ceiling mounted on a pole

Hang the heater from the ceiling on a pole in one of six lengths, from 9.69 to 41.18 inches, sold separately. Bromic suggests the underside of the heater sits 8 to 9 feet above the floor, with 96 inches as the minimum. Add the heat deflector where the ceiling is low.

No pilot light, with a safety shut-off

The heater lights on demand through a direct ignition system rather than a standing pilot, and it re-ignites itself if the flame drops out. If it cannot relight, a flame failure control shuts it off. The ignition and controls run from a 110V supply.

FAQ

Which size and fuel should I choose?

Size by the area you want to warm: about 160 square feet for the 300 series and about 215 for the 500 series, in ideal conditions. Choose the fuel by what is plumbed to the spot. Each version is built for natural gas or propane only, with its own orifice size and gas pressure.

Does it need power as well as gas?

Yes. The ignition and controls need a 110V supply drawing under 2 amps. The heater has a 36 inch cord with a three-prong plug and no switch of its own, so you control it at the power supply, with a switched outlet, a Manual Wall Switch or an Affinity On/Off control sold separately.

Can it go under a covered patio?

Yes, if the space stays open. The heater is for outdoor use only and must be kept out of the rain. With a roof and more than two walls, at least 25 percent of the total wall area must be completely open and at least 30 percent of the remaining wall area open and unrestricted. The manual sets out the other cases.

Do I need the heat deflector?

It is optional. Without it, keep 3 feet clear above and beside the heater. With it fitted, the space above drops to 14 inches. Bromic recommends it for low clearance areas, where it also protects the mounting surface and sends more heat forward. It is sold separately for each series.

Can I install it myself?

No. An authorized installer must make the gas connections to local code and leak test every joint with soapy water, never a flame. An authorized electrician must handle the electrical connections. Bromic asks for an inspection before use and at least once a year.

What should I expect the first time it runs?

Some smoke and odor. Oils used in manufacturing burn off, and the smell fades after about 30 minutes. Bromic advises avoiding the fumes from this first run.
